December 27 is International Day of Epidemic Preparedness. This annual event serves as a reminder of the urgent need to have resilient and robust health systems – as well as innovative approaches that will make up the next frontier in CMC and biopharmaceutical development.
"COVID-19 is a human tragedy. But it has also created a generational opportunity. An opportunity to build back a more equal and sustainable world. The response to the pandemic, and to the widespread discontent that preceded it, must be based on a New Social Contract and a New Global Deal that create equal opportunities for all and respect the rights and freedoms of all."
- António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations during his 2020 Nelson Mandela Lecture: "Tackling the Inequality Pandemic: A New Social Contract for a New Era"
Beyond the important knowledge sharing at CASSS and other scientific conferences, how can you use your unique knowledge and experience to further the goals of international day of epidemic preparedness?
Spread knowledge about precautionary measures
Diseases can spread faster than ever before due to globalization. It is important to share information regarding vaccinations and other safety measures.
Teach the children
Speak to your young ones and volunteer to give a talk in their classroom. Teach them about the importance of washing hands, staying clean, sanitizing, and other small measures that aid in limiting the spread of diseases.
Stay up to date
Continue to attend professional conferences to stay abreast of recent trends in CMC and analytical technologies. Lessons learned and preparedness formed the basis of the WCBP 2021 Special Edition forum. The summary paper, Creating CMC Strategies for Pandemics and Beyond, remains a relevant reminder of the challenges encountered in 2020 and strategies for better navigating in the future.
