World AIDS Day takes place on December 1 each year. First observed in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day, and it represents an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Globally, there are approximately 1.5 million new cases of HIV every year.

This year’s theme for World AIDS Day is “Putting Ourselves to the Test: Achieving Equity to End HIV.” It encourages people to unite globally to eliminate the disparities and inequities that create barriers to HIV testing, prevention, and access to HIV care.

Remarkable strides have been made since the first World AIDS Day commemoration 34 years ago. Scientific research has yielded innovations in HIV care, treatment, and prevention so that individuals with HIV can enjoy longer, healthier lives. Yet despite the tremendous progress, the is more work to do.

World AIDS Day may be once a year, but you can still support people living with HIV all year round. Visit https://www.hiv.gov/ to stay up-to-date with new developments in HIV, and learn how you can get involved as an activist or as a volunteer.
