The Member Spotlight is an ongoing Q&A series focused on getting to know the CASSS community. Today’s spotlight shines on Christof Finkler, Roche.
Q. What was your motivation to volunteer with CASSS?
I appreciate the value the CASSS community brings to the scientific society, and I am glad to have the opportunity to contribute to that.
Q. What do you do to relax? Do you have any hobbies?
Enjoying the nature during outdoor activities energizes me. During the week, I enjoy a walk or a run in the evening. Whereas at the weekend, I go for a bicycle trip or a hike into the mountains.
Q. What's your favorite type of food or special dish you cook? Why?
I really like red curries; either vegetarian, with fish, chicken or beef. It can be a simple delicious dish and quickly prepared or equally a complex dish that takes more time to prepare. For me it is essential that it is spicy enough.
Q. What is your favorite movie, tv show, music, or book?
One of my favorite movies is The Lord of the Rings. It has a fantastic story and wonderful characters. My favorite part of the trilogy is everyone can be the hero despite being a great warrior or an ordinary person as the little Hobbit is.
Q. What famous person (dead or alive) would you choose to have dinner with? Why?
I would like to have dinner with Mikhail Gorbachev. He was a brave leader. Through his idealism, belief in humanity, drive and also indulgence. In my personal view, he changed the world to a better place.
Q. What’s your favorite travel experience?
My favorite travel experience is a bicycle trip through Switzerland I made together with my wife. It is one of the Swiss national bicycle routes and brings you from Lake Geneva to Lake Constance. The beautiful landscapes, the lakes, and stunning views to the Alps and alpine foothills energized us for the upcoming hill.
Q. What would people be surprised to know about you?
I like Latin-American dances like salsa, bachata, and merengue and I enjoy spending time actively practicing the moves. It's a lot of fun.
Q. How did you get inspired to go into science/biotech/pharma industry?
Already during my early days in school, scientific subjects captured my interest. Later in high school, my interest was strengthened by an inspirational chemistry teacher.
Q. If you did anything other than your current occupation, what would it be?
I would have been a chef and opened my own restaurant. This would allow me to be creative and innovative too.
