LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Colleagues and Friends,
Some people dislike flying. Unless you fly to your vacation destination,
business travel may certainly be everything but pleasurable with all the
delays, missed connections and bad weather.
However, I recently found something positive in air transportation: Once
the door is closed, the flight attendant asks you to switch off all
electronic devices. This also terminates my contacts with the outside
world and prevents me from communicating with my laptop for the next
20-30 minutes. A good time to close my eyes and think quietly.
I did this again when I flew back from the MSB 2005 meeting that was
organized by CASSS in New Orleans in February. It came to my mind for
some reason that most of the things we encounter during our life return
again and again. The filmmakers have their Oscars once a year, the
Olympic games occur once every four years, and Halley's comet returns
every 76 years (and will be back again in 2061), just to name a few
benign examples.
I thought about what is the recurring feature in our Society. The answer
was simple: The meetings. CASSS is regularly organizing several meetings
with a frequency from twice a year (CMC Strategy Forum), once a year
(e.g., WCBP, CE Biotech), biannually (MSB, formerly HPCE), to a ten year
period (HPLC). It looks like the longer the interval, the larger the
meeting.
The just-completed MSB 2005 meeting was a really good one, with over 300
attendees, excellent scientific programs, interesting discussions, nice
location. And now, onto the next one.
The next big thing we all look forward to is HPLC 2006 which, after a
decade’s absence, returns to San Francisco to be chaired by John Frenz.
The preparation has already started. Mark your calendars for June 17-23,
2006.
Your President,

Frantisek Svec
